Two things kill books.
I’ve known a lot of people in my life who talked about writing. I can remember hearing people talking about writing a book. “I’ve been writing a book for the last seventeen years! I’ve got about 70 pages in it.” Or, “I’ve always wanted to write a book, but I didn’t know if it would be any good.
The bottom line is really, it takes 30 days to write a 50,000 word novel. If you’re writing shorter fiction novels, technically, you should be able to write six books a year – and then go back and polish them! If you could produce that many sellable books a year, you’d be signed to the kind of writing advances people dream about!
What is it that keeps people from writing their book?
- Doubt. This is the biggest one. “I always thought about writing a book on my life, how that would interest people. What do you think?” “I dunno, let me read it and I’ll tell you.” If you’re afraid to work on it because it might not be good, then you’ll never really know, will you? Everyone’s first book is terrible. But if you buy enough books on writing, write enough, compare what you’re writing against what you’re reading, and put into practice what you’re learning from all this, you’re going to write an amazing book! And you know what? People just might be interested in your life story!
- Procrastination. 70 pages of writing at 350 words a page is 24500 words. If you spent seventeen years writing 70 pages, that means you wrote four words a day. “It was a dark…” Finished for today!
