Researching Your Novel

When you’re writing a novel, sooner or later the novel turns itself in such a way you have to write about some place you’ve never been or write about something you know little.

Scrivener gives you a place to put the research.

Evernote gives you the ability to research.

For my short story, I had to research what a Maine fisherman would wear, use on a Lobstah boat, typical ways that a regional general store would carry, the history of Squirrel Island, etc.

You clip the info into Evernote.

Things that you think, “yes, I’ll use that” gets copied over into the Scrivener research folder.

A timeline program is crucial for some types of novels. For instance, I’ll need a timeline made up of various world events for my action thriller books. Historical novels as well. Anything Sci Fi can benefit.

Never rely on anything on the internet to remain there.

unconfirmed things are suspect. If you can’t confirm it through reputable cited sources, it’s suspect and shouldn’t be used.

Simple – research, clip and use!
