Is Your Book Good Enough?

That’s the question of the day.

Here’s the answer.

Probably not. That’s why we re-write and edit.

Some people re-write for a year. Man, that’s tough. I would have trouble with that.

I don’t think that even best selling authors can churn out a good enough book on its first draft.

It takes a structural re-write. Does this scene have tension? Can I get rid of it? If you can get rid of it, do it.

It takes a polish re-write. How many sticky sentences do you have? How many filter words? How many expletives?

It takes a plot rewrite. Did you fulfill all the promises of the novel? Were any left undone? Are all the subplots answered?

It takes an edit rewrite. Is this word crucial or not? What words add nothing to this sentence? (These are usually already weeded out in the polish re-write).

When it’s done, and you’ve cut more than you added, the answer will have changed.

Your book probably is after all this.
